This is a development for an animation project based on the The Japanese fairy tale "The Ice Dragon". It includes sketches, technical note, storyboard and visual research.

A huge terrible dragon kidnapped a little princess, and her father was petrified with grief. The brave samurai went in search of the princess, proving that the bravery of a small heart can be greater than the most dangerous dragon and the most terrible grief.

Is it possible to be strong and brave despite your smallness? Is it worth
losing hope if the heart is turned to stone?
This semester I will be doing animation based on Boris Akunin's fairy tale
“The Ice Dragon” and together with the audience I will try to answer these
questions.
The plot of the fairy tale tells about a brave little samurai with a big
heart. Having overcome his fear three times, he rescues a princess
captured by an ice dragon.
The fairy tale world will be minimalistic. The main means of expression
will be the scale and proportionality of the characters. The surrounding nature will
emphasize the contrast. The animation technique
is a shift, with frame-by-frame elements. The predominance of soft fluffy shapes, graphics are few - only
the main characters. I want to make the backgrounds on multi-layered tracing paper to
achieve a hazy, snowy effect. In some cases
, I will use watercolor and airbrush for the backgrounds. Limited color
palette, white, red, black, shades of gray.
The characters will be graphic, made with a brush, ink.
I want to use Japanese calligraphy as the basis for the graphics, I will try to preserve its
sharpness and elegance.
The artists close to me in this project are Qin Tianzhu, Chen Shi -Kwan.
A fairy tale for children 12+.
For me, as an artist, this project is an interesting challenge, I am glad
to have the opportunity to study Japanese culture more closely, to find a visual metaphor
for expressing the mentality and characteristics of this culture
